about

The Visible Range was the first CD Blake Leyh released after forming Luminous Records in December 1990. It's a collection of mostly-instrumental original compositions, with two pieces that include poetry text by other writers and one song written and sung by ex-Holy Sister Jill Fido.

The richly textured and densely arranged music covers a wide range of styles and moods, from the almost-danceable Hear, through the somnambulist vocal textures of Towards the Shore, the peaceful but dark Real Time, and ending with the stark jazz and bleak mood of The Glass Piano. Leyh plays fretless bass and various exotic percussion instruments on most tracks, and his odd but distinctive style of sax playing is featured throughout.

The Visible Range was distributed by the now-defunct Bayside Records, and received a fair amount of airplay on alternative radio, particularly on Santa Monica station KCRW. The piece "Respiration" was featured in Reza Abdoh's acclaimed 1991 stage extravaganza "The Boogeyman."
